What this guide covers
Shopify is rolling out two big changes that affect how Single integrates with your store: a new customer account system, and a new way for apps to plug into your storefront layout. To keep your music, video, and memberships running smoothly, you'll need to make four quick updates in your Shopify admin by Monday, June 8.
The four steps:
Upgrade to Shopify's new customer accounts
Add Single's instant access links to your checkout confirmation pages
Add Single's Tracklist block to your default product template
Switch existing
single.albumtemplates to your default product template
You can do them in any order, but we recommend the order above — the customer accounts upgrade is the foundation everything else builds on.
If you're not the one who manages your Shopify store day-to-day, this is a good one to forward to them.
Step 1: Upgrade to Shopify's new customer accounts
Shopify has deprecated their old customer account system, and a final shutoff date is coming this year. Single doesn't fully support the old system anymore, which can cause broken sign-ins for your fans. Upgrading puts you on Shopify's modern foundation and unlocks passwordless sign-in, store credit, and self-serve returns.
Step 2: Add Single's instant access links to your checkout confirmation pages
Right now, fans have to wait for an email to land before they can access what they bought. Adding Single's app block to your Shopify Thank You and Order Status pages lets them stream and download instantly at checkout.
Step 3: Add Single's Tracklist block to your default product template
Shopify is changing how apps plug into your storefront — moving to clean, modular blocks you can drag and drop. The Tracklist block is Single's version: it shows your album's tracklist and 30-second previews on your product page. Without it, fans can't preview tracks before buying.
You only need to add this once. Every album you publish from now on will use it automatically.
Step 4: Switch existing single.album templates to your default product template
If you've published digital albums through Single before with our audio player, they're likely on an older custom template called single.album. We built that template back when Shopify required apps to inject custom code into themes.
Now that Shopify supports proper app blocks, we're retiring it — your albums can live on the same template as the rest of your store.
Watch out for: make sure you've completed Step 3 first. If the Tracklist block isn't on your default template yet, switching an album over will temporarily remove its tracklist until you add the block.
How to check everything's working
Customer accounts: Sign out as a fan would, then sign back in — you should see the passwordless login flow.
Confirmation page links: Place a test order and confirm the streaming player or download button shows on the Thank You page.
Tracklist block + template switch: Open one of your album product pages in an incognito window. If you see the tracklist with play buttons, you're set.
FAQ
What happens if I don't complete these steps by June 8?
The biggest impact is on customer accounts — if you stay on the old system, fans may have trouble signing in. The other three mostly affect how album pages look (no previews, doesn't match the rest of your store). Single will continue selling and reporting sales either way.
Will my fans lose access to what they've already bought?
No. Existing purchases and customer accounts carry over.
Do my fans need to create new accounts?
No. They'll just sign in with a 6-digit code emailed to them, instead of a password.
What if I use a Shopify extension or custom theme that touches customer accounts?
Check with the app's support team before upgrading — most popular apps have already updated. If your theme has hand-coded customer account pages, a developer should review before upgrading.
What if I already upgraded to new customer accounts last year?
Skip Step 1, do Steps 2 through 4.
