Selling a Digital Release as a standalone product in Shopify

A standalone product is a single, dedicated product page for the digital album, with no formats to choose from. Fans land on the page, buy it, and get the album. There are two ways to set one up.

Overview

  • Let Us Create the Album Product — Single builds a brand-new product in your store for the whole release. Fastest option, and you don't touch Shopify.

  • Attach to a Product You've Already Made — you build the product in Shopify yourself, then attach the release to it. Choose this when you want full control over the product page, pricing, and layout.

Both options are on the Publish step of your release. This guide covers each.

Option 1 — Let Single create the album product

The quickest path. Single creates one product for the entire album — one checkout, not one product per track — and publishes it on the pre-order or release date you've set.

1. Go to Publish and choose "Let Us Create the Album Product"

In Single, open your release and move through to the Publish step (step 4). Under "How would you like to release this?", find Let Us Create the Album Product and click Continue.

2. Agree to the terms

Clicking Continue takes you straight to The Legal Stuff — confirming you own or are licensed for these recordings and agree to Single's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Copyright Policy. Review it and confirm.

That's it. Single creates the product in your store and publishes it automatically on your pre-order or release date. When fans buy it, they get an email link to stream and download the album. Orders are automatically marked "fulfilled" on delivery.

Option 2 — Attach to a product you've already made

Use this when you want to build the product page yourself in Shopify. The order is:

  1. In Shopify: create the digital album product.

  2. In Single: attach the release to that product.

Part A — Create the digital album product in Shopify

Do this in your Shopify admin before you publish the release in Single.

1. Create the product

In Shopify, go to Products and click Add product. Add your album title, description, and artwork. Leave the Variants section alone — a standalone digital album doesn't need options like Vinyl or CD.

2. Set the price

In the Pricing section, set the price for the album. This amount will take precedent over the price set in Single, if different.

3. Turn off inventory tracking and shipping

Because a digital album is delivered by email — not shipped — you don't want Shopify holding inventory or charging shipping for it.

  • Under Inventory, leave Track quantity off / toggle it so it reads Inventory not tracked (digital doesn't run out).

  • Under Shipping, turn off This is a physical product so it reads Not a physical product.

4. Save the product

Click Save. Your digital album product is now ready to connect to Single.

Part B — Attach the release to the product in Single

1. Open the release and go to Publish

In Single, open your release and move through to the Publish step (step 4). Under "How would you like to release this?", choose Attach to a Product You've Already Made and click Select Products.

2. Search for and select your product

On the Attach Release to Existing Products page, type your product title into the search box and select it from the results. Because the product has no variants, it's added directly — there's no variant picker.

3. Set the attachment details

The product appears as a card. Fill in the fields:

  • Attached Product Type: choose Digital Release or Preorder.

  • Reporting Type: choose Digital (All Territories) (or Reporting Disabled if you don't report to charts).

  • UPC / EAN: enter the UPC/EAN for the digital release.

  • Managed Fulfillment: set to Enabled so Single automatically marks these orders fulfilled on your publish or release date — no manual fulfillment needed.

  • Deliver to Existing Orders: only appears if the product already has purchases. Set to Enabled to deliver this release to fans who bought the product before you attached it (this bills per unit — see step 4), or Disabled to deliver only to future buyers.

4. Create the attachment

Click Create Attachments.

If Managed Fulfillment is enabled, a confirmation appears explaining Single will auto-update fulfillment status on the release date — click Continue.

If you turned on Deliver to Existing Orders for this attachment, a Deliver to Existing Purchases? step appears next. This delivers the release to everyone who has already bought the product, based on its publish or release date.

Heads up — this bills you. You'll be charged per unit for those past purchases, based on your subscription tier. To confirm, type DELIVER TO ALL PURCHASES in the box, then click Continue. If you don't want to deliver to past buyers, go Back and set Deliver to Existing Orders to Disabled.

Finally, review The Legal Stuff — confirming you own or are licensed for these recordings and agree to Single's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Copyright Policy — then click Create Attachments.

✅ Your release is now attached to the product!

What your fans experience

When a fan buys the album from your product page, they'll receive an email with a link to stream and download the full album. With either option, your checkout is one purchase for the whole album — not one per track.

Want fans to see the songs? Add a tracklist to your product page so shoppers can preview what's on the album. See Adding the tracklist block to your Shopify Product templates.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Not sure which option to pick? If you just want it live fast, use Let Us Create the Album Product. If you want to design the product page yourself, build it in Shopify and attach.

  • One release per product. Attach a single release so fans get the right album.

  • Selling a pre-order? Set your pre-order or release date in Single as usual — the digital delivery link goes out according to that date.

  • Don't see your product in the picker? Make sure it's saved in Shopify first, then refresh the page in Single.

  • Accidentally created a duplicate product? If you used "Let Us Create the Album Product" but already had your own product, you can delete the extra product Single created in Shopify, then re-publish using Attach to a Product You've Already Made.

  • Shipping charged on a digital order? Open the product in Shopify and confirm the Shipping section reads Not a physical product.
